About me

My name is Jan Hoogland. I am an arabist specialised in Moroccan Arabic, Lexicography of Modern Standard Arabic and of Moroccan Arabic.

Between 1983 and 2018 I have been an assistant professor of Arabic at Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

The start of my academic career was the assignment to create a course book of Moroccan Arabic. The final version was published in Dutch, English and German. A French translation is also available so if you know a publisher interested in publishing the book, please let me know.

Between 1997 and 2003 I was project coordinator and member of the editorial board of a project to compile an Arabic-Dutch and Dutch-Arabic dictionar. The Arabic-Dutch dictionary formed the basis of the Oxford Arabic-English Dictionary published in 2014.

From 2009 until 2015 I was the director of the Netherlands Insitute in Morocco (NIMAR): www.nimarrabat.nl
NIMAR is involved in promoting and encouraging cooperation and exchange between Morocco and the Netherlands in the domains of higher education and scientific research.

In 2018 I voluntarily retired but I still am motivated to transfer my knowledge and experience to younger generations. This is why I started the Media Arabic Text Collection and the Top Media Vocabulary. In close cooperation with my colleague (and former teacher) Roel Otten, in december 2021 I also launched the Classical Arabic Text Collection (CATC).
